Backup and disaster recovery

An untested backup is not a backup, it is a hope. Most companies find out they cannot restore on exactly the day they need to. We test the restore, not just the copy.

Three copies, on two types of medium, one off site. The standard that survives fire, theft and ransomware at once.

A version that cannot be deleted or encrypted even by a compromised account. Modern ransomware goes for the backups first.

The two numbers that matter

How long the company can be down and how much work it can afford to lose. A nightly backup means that, at worst, you lose a full working day. For some companies that is acceptable; for others it is catastrophic.

The conversation starts from those two questions, not from a product. The solution and its cost follow from the answers.

Why we insist on testing

We have met backups that had run without error for months and could not be restored: a missing configuration file, a database copied while it was writing, an encryption password nobody remembered.

A restore test takes a few hours. Discovering it does not work in the middle of an incident costs days.

Frequently asked questions

01Our data is in Microsoft 365. Isn't it already backed up?

Not in the sense you expect. Microsoft guarantees service availability, not recovery of data a user deletes or an attacker encrypts. The recycle bin has a deadline, after which the data is gone for good.

02How often are backups taken?

It depends on how much the company can afford to lose. Typically daily for files and more often for active databases. We set the frequency from the impact of a loss, not the other way round.

03What happens if we are hit by ransomware?

The immutable copy stays intact, because it cannot be modified even with administrator rights. You restart from it, following the written plan. That is why paying a ransom does not need to be part of the conversation.
